Gray skies and rain that drizzles. Wind that shakes the branches and fog that hides the lights. Except instead of being stuck in Monday traffic, the view consists of architectures of Giotto, Baroque sculptures that enhance fountains within the city and the Ponte Vecchio bridge from the 14th century that spans the River Arno.
Los Rios Community College District encourages students to escape the busy life of Sacramento to relish in the beauty of Florence, Italy, in the spring 2025 semester as part of its Study Abroad program. The program is available to all students within the Los Rios District.
“Studying abroad in Florence offers students an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in one of Italy’s most culturally rich cities, “ said Katie Pasilis, a Study Abroad assistant.
Students will depart on Feb. 1, 2025 and return home on May 2, 2025. The requirements to join the program are that students must be 18 years or older, must have 12 completed college units, and must carry a 2.25 cumulative GPA. Applications are accepted until Nov. 1, requiring a $450 deposit by the student.
Along with the educational requirements, the average cost of the program per student is $8,350, not including additional costs of textbooks, meal vouchers, medical insurance, or the group flight. If students are interested in financial aid, grants or awards it is advised by the facility to contact the financial aid department and to research scholarships.
Although the process may seem daunting and demanding, this program offers an exceptional experience where students can study journalism, math, art and English while being culturally engulfed in the life of Florence.
“Many of the students I have talked to are excited about living in a new place and experiencing a different culture, I have these same feelings, said Joseph Steeve, a Study Abroad and math professor, “Without this program, I would have to wait until I retire for an experience like this.”
