Back in June, according to a press release, Sacramento Republic Football Club came out and said that they were to announce the plans for a new soccer stadium. It’s now October, and we are still awaiting the announcement.
The stadium, if the plans are to be put into action, would be constructed at the Sacramento Railyards. If this does happen like it appears it will, the construction of Railyards Stadium would be monumental for the city of Sacramento and its surrounding areas.
Over the past year or so, Sacramento sports fans have swam in the success of both the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento State football team.
This recent upswing of sports success in Sacramento didn’t just start with those two teams—it also included the Sac Republic’s runner-up finish in Open Cup, in which they would fall to Orlando City SC in the championship.
There was even a stretch before 2022 where Sac Republic was winning games, and were really the only bright spot for Sacramento sports fans. A new stadium feels only right for the team who has made the city proud, and for the city that has shown up every season for the team.
Railyards Stadium is supposed to be able to hold north of 12,000 fans, and would only help the Sacramento area blossom even further. The stadium would allow for a larger scale of soccer with more fans. This would give Sac Republic a legitimate shot at becoming the newest expansion team in the MLS, a move that almost happened before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The obvious positive of Sac Republic joining the MLS with this new stadium would be the money it would bring the city of Sacramento. Of course, more opposing teams’ fans will travel to away games in a larger scale league like the MLS, but more Sacramento area natives will also attend the games with the stadium bound to attract the curiosity and attention of many in the area.
The fact that the soccer club will play on a larger stage against a higher level of competition will draw a larger amount of locals to the games who either don’t follow soccer or have a very minimal knowledge of it.
It also helps that the MLS recently signed world superstar Lionel Messi. Everyone and their mother has flocked to MLS games to see Messi in action, and it will be no different if he comes to visit Sactown.
If the higher-ups within the Sac Republic organization and the city leaders of Sacramento were smart, they’d get the construction for Railyards Stadium going immediately. It will only improve Sacramento, and the Sacramento sports fans deserve it.
