The ARC softball team hosted a doubleheader against Santa Rosa Junior College on Saturday, April 12th at noon.
The Beavers played poorly in their first game, particularly on defense, and lost 12-1. There were a number of mental errors in the outfield, misjudging several fly balls, and being off target with a number of throws to the bases.
The game was never very close, and the team’s attitude and dedication were called into question. “When we play games like that, we beat ourselves; that team (in the first game) that wasn’t us….Defensively, we weren’t hitting or doing what we needed to do. We just do that sometimes, they make mental mistakes, I don’t know if it’s pre game jitters or what ,” said Brittni Hodge, 3rd base.
They played much better in their second game, winning 5-3. They started out fast, getting out to a 3-0 lead. Santa Rosa was able to climb out from under their early deficit, but ARC was able to score two more runs to close out the game and win 5-3.
They started out playing with more energy and passion in their second game than in the first, contributing to their early lead. “ It (the turnaround from the first game) was more chemistry, we just started talking more; when you wanna come back it’s a team effort, it’s not just about one person,” said Hodge.
But their sudden turnaround could also be attributed to a sudden sense of motivation. “Honestly we threatened them, we told them that practice was gonna be real hard on Monday if they didn’t turn their attitudes,” said Jessica Heaney an assistant coach for the softball team.
ARC will go to regional playoffs starting on Friday May 2nd. Their opponent has not been announced.
