Hungry students returning to campus this week may have noticed a lean, green, golf cart with food puttering around campus.
The new American River College Lunch Provisions on Demand cart is driven by Anna Hall and Kim Marshall, who are the only two employees qualified to operate the miniature food truck around campus. They have nicknamed The Lunch Pod, “The Fresh Delicious” or the “Fresh and Fluffy.”
The cart will arrive near Davies Hall every morning around 9:30 a.m. and become mobile at approximately 11:30 a.m. It will stay on campus until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
The cart will carry coffee, cold beverages, chips, fruit, pre-made sandwiches and breakfast burritos in the morning and will also serve pizza slices and hamburgers in the afternoon.
The cart runs on electricity and uses propane to keep food warm throughout the cooler mornings and afternoons.
Marshall and Hall had to take a driving course through Aramark before they were allowed to drive the cart and are the only two employees at this time manning the mobile lunch pod.
Several students have already taken notice of the pod, including Samuel Si who is a first time student and also first time customer. “The location is convenient and I think the idea of the pod is innovative,” Si said.
Students who are used to having the convenience of purchasing food someplace other than the cafeteria were sorely put off last semester when the trailer near Davies Hall closed and they were forced to walk to the gym or the Cafeteria for food.
Hall and Marshall are excited to help students at the new mobile food site and encourage all students and faculty to come by and see the new meals on wheels for themselves.
