Vote to be heard
80 million Americans did not vote in 2020
Voting is an important standard in our community. It allows many to have a voice and make changes that are needed to uphold the standards.
In history, numerous laws have prevented many from being heard, taken seriously, or even getting the chance to vote. This is why voting is so important.
Before placing your vote it is key to do research on all the candidates, ask questions and be critical, because the person you choose will be the one making all the big decisions.
There is a saying: “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.” I believe this to be true. According to a 2020 report from National Public Radio, the 2020 election had the highest voter turnout, however, 80 million Americans did not vote.
Yes, there are many reasons why people do not vote; they are not registered, not a citizen, do not like the selection, or feel like their vote doesn’t count. These are all just big excuses.
And I know over the years people have great examples of why they believe their vote doesn’t count. Like in the year 2016, when Hillary Clinton ran against Donald Trump. Everyone was sure she was going to win after receiving the popular vote, but she didn’t. This is a prime example that showed it didn’t matter what the people thought, only the electoral college. These are electors from different political parties who vote on who to become the next president or vice president from each state.
However, the vote many people place does count and matter, especially with smaller elections, many forget that it could come down to one vote that could make a difference between who wins and who loses.
Moreover, if you do not vote then you have no right to be mad about any new policies and procedures that will be put in place, because you had a chance to make a difference and you did not. It means that if the prices go up, then “you can’t complain,” because if you placed a vote then your vote could have made that difference.
Many need to understand that voting also means commitment—meaning it shows people’s loyalty and dedication to their community. Many did not always have the option to vote, so it is important to vote with honor and dignity.
Overall voting is very important, it is a way to be heard, seen and make a difference at the same time. If you have never voted before I encourage everyone to try it out at least once, experience the feeling that comes with the thrill of placing your ballet in the box or clicking the button on the computer screen. Also, don’t forget to encourage others to vote as well.
