An international student attending various Los Rios colleges has had their F-1 visa revoked by the Department of Homeland Security on April 8, according to an email sent out to faculty, students and staff by LRCCD Chancellor Brian King.
Following the executive order by President Donald Trump to deport immigrants within the United States using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, nearly 300 international students have had their rights to stay in this country eradicated in recent days, according to a reporting by the New York Times.
The status change for the Los Rios student has been recorded in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, according to a statement by King.
“Out of respect for the student and their rights, their identity has been kept anonymous, King said.” Student Services leadership has contacted the student along with providing legal and mental health resources to fight the action made against them.
While immigration officials have been seen at 4-year universities, including Sacramento State and UC Davis, this is the first time a Los Rios student has experienced a visa revocation.
“This is the first time this has happened to a Los Rios student, to our knowledge, but we are prepared for the possibility of future instances,” King said. “We have no reason to believe that any immigration officials have been on campus in connection with this, or any other Los Rios student.”
“The Los Rios District will continue to actively support and defend this student, King added, while continuing to protect other students and their legal statuses.”
