The American River College Current staff had a triumphant time at the 2024 Journalism Association of Community Colleges NorCal Conference held on Oct. 26. at San Francisco State University. Like last year, the staff members brought home awards and honorable mentions.
The Current staff earned a meritorious Online General Excellence Award. The editorial staff won second place in the editorial category for “District vote places undue financial burden on students with transit fee.” Second-semester student Jose Leon earned a third-place award for his feature story, “Take This Class: Hospitality Management 326.”
Former student, Shy Bell, earned an honorable mention in the category critical review for “ “Try That In a Small Town” is a Cryptic Condescension Towards Black People.” He also earned second place in the category video for soft new reporting, “The Current Presents: ARC’s Fashion Club.”
William Forseth was the big winner, coming home with winning 3 awards at the conference. Forseth won third place in the on-the-spot opinion writing contest. He also won first place in the critical review category for “ARC’s Production of “Airness” Peeks Into the Lives of Competitive Air Guitarists,” and first place in the soft news reporting video category for “ARC music students form “Analogue Banana”.”
JACC is a non-profit organization that offers journalism students training and education at community colleges throughout California. Every fall, the organization holds a regional conference for all of the community college journalism programs throughout Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area and is followed by a state-wide conference in the spring.
