Student Senate is moving to the Student Center lobby.
The Thursday, Nov. 6 meeting of the Associated Student Body Student Senate will be held in the lobby of the Student Center next to the cafeteria so that they can be more accessible to students. It is from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
“As much as we would love for the students to come see us, they are not doing that,” Tamara Dunning, who is acting as ASB Student Senate president, said. “We’ll come see them.”
The Student Senate is also considering a bill that will provide for a light snack and beverages after the Nov. 6 meeting.
There will be tables set up where members of the board will be seated and easily identified, and microphones to accommodate the noise level from the cafeteria.
Student senators seemed excited about the opportunity to meet closer to the cafeteria, where they can be more easily seen by students.
“It is important that we outreach to students,” said Director of Activities David Hilton II. “I think it will be a good idea to inform more students of what we’re doing and what bills are being passed.”
“I think it’s both exciting and terrifying,” said Dunning. “I’m sure I will be nervous, but I am confident that every member of the Board as well as (myself) feel that this will be an excellent meeting.”
In the public comment section of the Oct. 23 meeting, Hilton said “We’re going to be out there with all the people in the cafeteria. On the issues, we want to get more voices, more perspective from fellow students.”
“We are going to bring our A game,” Hilton added.
During the discussion, Dean of Student Services Manuel Perez stressed practicing “culture of care,” which includes being tolerant of the noise factor from students coming in and out of the area.
There are several bills the Student Senate is considering. One would create a publication for the Student Senate to communicate with the students about upcoming advocacy events. It would also purchase advertising space for ASB.
Another would fund business cards for all Student Senate members.
Finally, Bill F14-07 will include the costs of attending the March in March next year.
