American River College has a new acting Associated Student Body Senate President. Following President Tyrone Robinson’s resignation yesterday ASB Director of Finance Jorge Riley will take the position as acting Senate President.
Riley comes to office by the order of succession amidst a sea of controversy. The acting president was elected to the office of Director of Finance despite protests lead by fierce, the campus LGBTQA group.
The spring semester election saw members of the ASB, including former President Quierra Robey, donning signs saying “vote no on Riley” due to his position with the 2008 ASB student senate. The old senate had taken a stance supporting the now infamous anti-gay marriage legislation, Prop 8.
As the only student body in California to endorse the proposition, ARC was the subject of ridicule by talk shows and late night comedians including Jon Stewart of The Daily Show.
When reached for comment by The Current, Riley was unaware of his new appointment and was unable to comment on his new role of leadership.
The Current will follow the story as more information becomes available.
Ed. note: Originally, Jorge Riley’s title was given as “Treasurer.” The actual title of the office to which he was elected is “Director of Finance,” and the article has been edited to reflect this.
