“Split Fiction” which was teased at the 2024 Game of the Year awards, was officially released on Mar. 6, 2025.
“Split Fiction” is based on two characters who go to a company to get their stories published, but find that there is something suspicious happening within the company. One character likes to write fantasy and the other character likes to write sci-fi.
The two get stuck together in a simulation that brings their stories to life, but because they are forced together, their stories are split.
The goal of the game is to play through a sci-fi story and a fantasy story to find glitches, so the characters can be free of the simulation.
This game is one of the best of the year because of its teamwork-like gameplay that you must go through in order to succeed. The plot of the game is another reason why I believe it is one of the best games of the year.
The creators are the same creators who made “It Takes Two”, the game that won Game of the Year awards in 2021. “It Takes Two” was truly a one-of-a-kind game that is also two-player. The game was about two parents who go on an adventure and fall back in love. It requires a lot of teamwork during the challenges you face while having mini-games to enjoy some fun.
“Split Fiction” consists of similar gameplay features and storylines to “It Takes Two”. Though they are similar gameplay-wise, the plots of the games are different.
I was intrigued by the game when I first saw the teaser for it during the 2024 Game of the Year awards. I played “It Takes Two” in 2023 which truly lived up to its title of Game of the Year. Expectations were high for Split Fiction as it built the same hype.
“Split Fiction” is enjoyable because every story that is played is distinct from one another. For example, one mini-game was about riding a sand shark through a desert while you try to make it to the end. But the main story that was being played was a sci-fi story about two assassins who are trying to defeat the final boss.
In my opinion, the mini-games having different stories than the main game, keeps the gameplay more interesting. This is because it’s not constantly the same, so it almost lures you into finding out what the mini-game stories are about.
The gameplay itself is extraordinary. “Split Fiction” has detailed designs that complement the two different stories. The sci-fi story has multiple cool futuristic buildings and cars with neon elements. The fantasy story on the other hand has beautiful greenery and nature with magical elements. The sci-fi stories give me dark and vengeful vibes, while the fantasy story has more bright and fun vibes.
According to Steam comments, many gamers have expressed their love and enjoyment of the game as well.
“My wife and I adored ‘It Takes Two’, so we jumped into ‘Split Fiction hoping’ for more magic. And wow! this game gets co-op,” said Medhi Mote in a customer review on Steam posted on Mar 10.
“This game offers a truly unique experience. The worlds are meticulously crafted, and everything about it feels perfect. The story is captivating, and the sound design is outstanding,” said Kinslayer in a customer review on Steam posted on Mar 13.
A favorite part of the game for me is the mini-games. I love one of the fantasy mini-games because of how funny and unserious it was. In that mini-game, you both play pigs on a farm that have magical powers. One of the pigs farts rainbows to jump and the other pig can be a spring that stretches itself to jump.
Even though the main story is quite profound most of the time, the mini-games are put in for you to shake off a bit of the seriousness and have fun.
This is the key element that makes the game worth checking out. The story plot is so different from what you’d expect. The game will surely always surprise you and keep you on your toes.
